Ix Chel, Goddess of the Moon
Ix Chel (pronounced 'ee shell') is the Maya Goddess of the Moon, Water, Weaving and Childbirth. She was worshipped among the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula. She is the Mother of all of the Mayan deities and rules over the cycles of life and death. Ix Chel (pronounced 'ee-shell') grandfather hurled lightning jealously at her and killed her. Grieving dragonflies sang over Ix Chel's lifeless body for 13 days, at the end of which time she emerged again, whole and alive.
